I saw these two male Woodpeckers in our area. They went around the tree and they are grabbing each other’s beaks.

We have them near to where I live in Ayrshire but I haven’t seen them. My husband has pointed them out but not being much of a birder I’ve missed them. I did get a fantastic view of them in Mexico in the Tulum area where they regularly visited a tree outside our apartment.

I recently read that woodpeckers wrap their tongues around their brains to protect it from damage. So fascinating to watch them.

We don’t see the full-size pileated very often. I have a collection of the little downy woodpeckers that come to my suet in the winter, and the occasionally hairy one. Atrocious names 😉
