We visited Catania, Sicily and an amazing site to see. It was locally called “Mongibello”, Europe’s largest and most active volcano. Its frequent eruptions are often accompanied by large lava flows. We learned for about 500,000 years and is in the midst of a series of eruptions that began in 2013.

Lovely! We walked around Mount Etna in 2011 and it was quite spectacular … fortunately, there were no eruptions when we were there!

We should have hiked around Mount Etna but a great view . No eruptions when we were there. But years ago there was an eruption when we saw it .

Beautiful, but very precarious: it looks like it’s about to blow off anytime soon!

It caught my attention.
Very photogenic but later after we left there was a huge amount of the lava flow.

We were there in the early 2000’s and Etna had a mlld eruption spewing smoke over everything. I remember we had a white hire car and when we parked in Catania for lunch and sight-seeing it got covered in black ash and when we got back to our hotel in Taormina, the washing we’d left hanging on our terrace was so black that it had to go to the hotel laundry! We didn’t really relax for the remainder of that week and everyone seemed to be on edge.
