Many interesting and well preserved historic sites to see within the Walled City of Cartagena. Easy to maneuver around the narrow street….all within walking distance.
Pedro de Heredia
First historic statue we come upon is Pedro de Heredia (1505-1554) a Spanish conquestador and founder of Cartagena.
Plaza de Los Coches
Plaza de Los Coches, an area for parking horse drawn carriages. Previously named Plaza del Esclavo, the site where black slaves were transported in from Africa.
Palenqueras
There are black women, known as Palenqueras ( Fruit Sellers). They are dressed as Africans, which they are not. Originally from a village south of Cartagena. Now they pose with fruit baskets, which at one time years ago they did sell fruit. Today they are here posing for tourists to take their photo for money.
Hello.
I am interested in to know if you loved Cumbia music, which has its roots in Colombia while being in Cartagena.
Happy and safe travels!

Yes there was music on very corner. We had a balcony overlooking the streets…was fun sitting out and enjoying the music.

Even though Cartagena is one of the most touristy cities in Colombia, we loved it. The architecture, the colours, it’s such a great area.
